Affiliate Program
An agreement with another commercial Web site whereby a referral fee or commission is paid for any sales the commercial site makesfrom customers who have arrived at the site via a link on your site.It is a marketing strategy which encourages other web sites to refer customers.
Banner Ad
Banner ads are the boxed ads often seen at the top of a Web Page. They are another marketing tool to raise the awareness of a web site and gain revenue as well.
Cookies
Cookies are a small text file that are placed on the visitors hard drive by th eWeb server of the site they are viewing. They let the Web server know that soneone returns to the site, how often they return, as well as where the visitors goes to when moving around the site. A cookie also uniquely identifies each visitor and can only be read by the server which placed the cookie.
Cybersquatting
The act of registering a list of Domain names, usually popular corporate names, with the intention of selling them back to the companies at a price.
The names effectively belong to the cybersquatter who registered them, but the issue is the offenders infringement on the companys trademark.
Domain Name
A domain name is the name given to organisations and people so their information can be located on the Internet. This name is then linked to the Internet Protocol address (ussually a 12 digit number) that represents a physical position on the web.
Framing
Occurs when one Web site links to another Web site but incorporates that second Web site as part of the first site. Viewers never leave the first and think the information has been provided by that site. This can cause legal implications unless you have the permission of the second site to frame within yours.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol. a method of transferring data/files from one computer to another which is off site or in a remote location.
HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)
HTML is the code which is used to format the text on a Web site. HTML tags plain text and the Web browser reads these tags to format the page.
Hyperlink
These are elements within an electronic document. Their function is to link to another area in the same Web site or to entirely different Web site. They help the user navigate Web pages. Hyperlinks are an essential ingredient to navigating around the World Wide Web and are usually activated byclicking on them. They are also known as hypertext links.
Iternet Protocol (IP) Address
A unique numerical code which helps identify the location of a Web site on the internet
ISP(Internet Service Provider)
ISP connects individuals and companies to the internet. ISP offer a variety of services and systems to access the Internet including Web hosting packages.
Meta Tag
A meta tag is a HTML tag containing keywords which represent the contents of a Web page. Search Engines specifically use these tags when identifying and finding information.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)
SSL is encryption technology which scrambles informationas it is transmitted overthe Internet. SSL is the main protocol, whichhas been developed for transimtting private information and documents vias the internet.
URL (Uniform Resource Locator)
This is the address of a file accessible via the internet. It is a global address of Web sites and other resources on the World Wide Web.
